Description

2013's birthday gift to my father, who's birthday was on the 20th June (but I didn't upload it then because I was on a flight with him and later because he was on a business trip and I couldn't ask him till now whether I could upload it or not) This is also a contest entry for the wonderful charity artbook Ethereal-artbook

Country: Hong Kong
Category: Yellow
I wanted to portray the brilliant naturally occurring 'gold' colors, when I think of gold I think of tigers and autumn. What better but to combine the two?! I also really wanted to contribute some way to the Red Kite charity which supports cancer patients and families for some personal reasons connected to my close friends and family.

This may be my largest personal watercolor piece I've done, I'm not completely happy with the outcome but I tried many new things such as water and autumn scenes, putting in all the effort that I could. Inspired by my previous gift for my father:

Hi Syphellium,
great piece, I love it.
Here are some critiques if you are ever planning to redo the painting.

COLOUR -The palette is very nice and consistent. Maybe you could consider adding some cold tones in the shadows to make it more interesting and dynamic.

DRAWING / COMPOSITION - Just a couple of things seem a little off here. The tiger shoulders look a little too high. Secondly, the city in the background is a nice touch, but it's kind of hard to spot, it's too close to the tiger's eyes, which are the main focus of the piece. You may consider moving the city to the left end of the picture.

DEPTH - I think this is the piece's main issue. It all feels a little too flat. You cleverly have three levels of depth (foreground with grass, middleground with tiger, and background with mountains), but they do not stand out. The background mountains and sky could have duller and less saturated colours, and less defined contours. The foreground grass could be darker in value, so as to make it stand out more and contrast with the rest of the picture.
Also, in the middleground, you could try enhancing shadows (the treetops and barks) so as to help the viewer's eye focus on the tiger.

All in all, that's a very nice piece though.
Keep it up!
